Country description
ClimateSubtropical Mediterranean in the north and along the coast, in the south and in internal areas - tropical deserted. Average temperatures in January in the north are +10 C, in the south of +21 C, July temperatures are +26 and +33 C accordingly. The best time to visit the country is September-November and March-June.
Population
About 9,7 million people, mainly Tunisians (Arabs of Tunis, 97 %), and also berbers (1 %) and Europeans (2 %).
State language
The state language is Arabian, the second official language in Tunis is French, almost all residents of the country can speak it. Italian, English and German are widespread too.
Currency
Money is the Tunisian dinar, one dinar has 1000 milliemes. The country has in circulation the old and new banknotes with the face value 5, 10, 20 and 30 dinars, and also coins of 1 dinar, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5 milliemes. Coins of 1 milliemes are rarely seen.
Transportation
Taxi
There are several kinds of taxi in Tunis. For movement within one settlement you should stop the taxi car of yellow color. Cost is about 300 milliemes per 1 km, tip upto 500 milliemes. "The big taxi" is intended for the trips to another city (trip is paid according to the counter) as well as the special fixed-route taxi with the fixed route, the price for which shall be agreed in advance. The car with the red strip goes to the long distances, the taxi car with dark blue strip moves between the nearby settlements. Prices for the Tunisian taxi are comparatively low.
Bus service
You can reach nearly any corner of the country by bus - you only need to find out the schedule and location of the bus stop which moves along the route you want to.
TGM
Transport like the tram is called so from the first letters of the main destinations you can get to by it. (Tunis - la Gullet - la Marsa). Also this type of transport can be used for a trip to Salambo, Carthago and Sidi Bu Said. Trip duration from Tunis to La Marsa is about 35 minutes.
