Le Chartreuse du Val St Esprit

The chateau is located in the heart of the Artois Region, 5km from Béthune, on the main Paris – Calais – London road. It is situated about 35km away from Arras and Saint Omer and 40km from Lille.

Saint Bruno (1032-1101), the founder of the order of the Carthusian monks, created one of the most beautiful networks of buildings in European history. La Chartreuse of Gosnay is one of these prestigious properties. From its origin in 1320 to the dawn of the 21st century, it has kept the traditions of the Artois region. A surrounding wall, some vestiges in the right wing of the castle and a gate dated 1699 on the old dairy preserve the memory of an architectural grouping amongst the most imposing in the region. For centuries, it has mobilized the most talented craftsmen to come from far and wide for its maintenance and extension.

The splendour and the fervour of the monastic community of the Val Saint Esprit attracted distinguished guests. Among them, the most famous were Marguerite of Flanders, Isabelle of Portugal, Philippe of Burgundy’s wife, Jean sans Peur, Philippe le Bon and Charles le Téméraire.

In 1792, the guest quarters of the monastery, protected against the demolition contractors, were converted into a luxurious residence and the property became a listed historic building in 1986. Thanks to the determination, the passion and the efforts of one man – Jean Constant - La Chartreuse du Val Saint Esprit has become a magnificent hotel and catering complex offering the largest range of services in the heart of the Europe.
